Affiliate Marketing

Another way to generate supplemental income on your website is with Affiliate Marketing.  With this type of marketing, you provide links to other websites’ products or services, and you earn commissions each time someone clicks on that link and makes a purchase. The links you use on your site include a special URL that usually includes your affiliate ID number, or something similar. So that, along with other things like your browser’s cookies, enables you to get credit for the purchase that originated on your website.

There are many websites out there that serve as directories for companies with affiliate programs. Each of these companies has their own rules, requirements and guidelines for becoming one of their affiliates. Be sure you do your homework and research any company you decide to affiliate with.

Pros and Cons

In my opinion, there are more pros to affiliate marketing than cons.

Here are the Pros:

  • You make money without ever having to sell a product yourself; that’s all handled by the advertising merchant.
  • You don’t have to deal with any customers; again, that is the merchant’s job.
  • You can generate income without even being online; your website is doing the work for you.
  • You can pick and choose to whom you want to be an affiliate with, so you can pick those that will fit within your business niche.

And here are the Cons:

  • The merchant controls all the commissions and can change them at any time.
  • Payouts often have to reach a minimum before a payment will be sent.

Just know that affiliate marketing is not for everyone, and it shouldn’t be viewed as plan to get rich quick. Affiliate marketing takes patience, perseverance, and time in order for you to become successful at it. If you’re unwilling or unable to invest those things, then this type of marketing may not be for you.
